Create a Beautiful Life

through the Art of Self-Cultivation

The Beautiful Soul revives the 18th century philosophy of the Beautiful Soul & salon culture.

We advance classical ideals and the Platonic value of beauty through the arts, music, and conversation.

Our writings, salons, and cultural retreats teach the art of living,

applying ancient wisdom for human flourishing.

We believe that beauty in art, architecture, music, and nature heals the mind, nourishes the soul, and elevates the human experience. Our mission is to advance the creation and conservation of beauty to live a good life in social harmony.

Our Philosophy

Our Background

Founder Justine Kolata is a writer educated at Yale University (B.A) and the University of Cambridge (Ph.D.) Her first book, In Pursuit of the Beautiful Soul, examines the philosophy of the Beautiful Soul and salon culture. Her forthcoming book, Beauty Will Save the World, explores why beauty matters and how beauty can enrich our lives as a universal good. Drawing on her scholarly research into beauty and classical ideals, and her experience organising salons since 2013, she founded The Beautiful Soul to revive the practice of this philosophical tradition.

Our Books

The ideals which have always shone before me and filled me
with the joy of living are goodness, beauty, and truth.
— Albert Einstein

Salons to awaken the soul and discover the poetry of living.

We create bespoke salons that revive the art of conversation.

Salons are intellectually stimulating and culturally enriching gatherings, bringing together curious minds to exchange ideas and explore life’s greatest questions.

Inspired by classical Platonic ideals of beauty, our salons combine thoughtful conversation with curated cultural experiences to elevate the mind and nourish the spirit.

Our salons can be arranged for private groups, companies, and cultural organisations, and may be hosted at a client’s residence or at our event space.

Our Process:

  • Learn about our clients’ interests and objectives.

  • Develop a salon theme and conversation topics tailored to those interests.

  • Create a bespoke conversation menu to guide and enrich discussion.

  • Curate complementary cultural experiences, such as classical music performances or lectures.

  • Manage all event logistics, including invitations, guest correspondence, catering, and supplier coordination.

  • Design an elegant setting, including tablescapes and decorative details.

  • Provide an experienced salonnière to moderate the conversation and encourage thoughtful participation.

Salon Formats:

Private Salons

The Children’s Philosophy Salon

Where children learn to think deeply, converse beautifully,

and discover the world of ideas.

Our children’s salons introduce young minds to culture and ideas through the art of conversation.

In an age of AI, the ability to think critically, ask meaningful questions, and form independent judgments will be among the most valuable skills a child can develop.

To counter the detrimental effects of screens, cultivating a love of conversation and meaningful human connection is an enduring gift we can give young generations.

The salon offers children the opportunity to explore ideas, listen attentively to others, and develop the confidence to form and articulate their own views eloquently.

Oxbridge and Ivy League-educated tutors employ our Socratic Salon Method, drawing on thoughtful questioning and discussion to foster curiosity, intellectual independence, and clarity of expression. No prior knowledge of philosophy is required.

Salon Structure:

  • The idea: Each salon introduces the ideas of a great philosopher, thinker, or artist, making complex concepts accessible and engaging for a younger audience. Topics might include Kant’s Categorical Imperative, Plato’s conception of beauty, or Aristotle’s idea of the good life.

  • The conversation: Following a short presentation, our cultural tutor leads a lively Socratic discussion, encouraging children to question, reason, articulate their ideas and consider different perspectives.

  • The music: Each salon concludes with a live classical musical performance chosen to complement and deepen the ideas explored during the conversation.

What is Included:

  • An Ivy League- or Oxbridge-educated cultural tutor

  • A curated philosophical conversation

  • Live classical music performed by a renowned concert artist

  • A beautiful and inspiring setting

  • Refreshments and snacks
