Jealousy

Jealousy is both reasonable and belongs to reasonable men, while envy is base and belongs to the base, for the one makes himself get good things by jealousy, while the other does not allow his neighbour to have them through envy.- Aristotle

In this salon we will discuss the nature of jealousy and its myriad effects. We will consider whether jealousy is a good and necessary emotion or something that we should suppress. We will explore the circumstances that fuel jealousy such as career competition, and most especially, betrayal and infidelity. Drawing from history, music, literature, and philosophy we will consider the essence of this fundamentally human quality.

At this salon there will be live opera music performed by a celebrated pianist and tenor. The pieces will fit with the theme of jealousy and include Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro.

To accompany the conversation and music we will also host a wine and cheese tasting. Guests are asked to bring a bottle of their favourite wine (under £20) and their favourite cheese. We will have a blind taste test and then share in an abundance of delicious food and drink!
